Tristan Martin named as teen driver of big rig in deadly Colorado accident

A Channel 11 News story has identified 16-year old Tristan Martin as the teenage driver of an 18-wheeler pulling a loaded horse trailer that struck and killed Amanda Omo-lyamu (38) and Shun Jones (48) on Interstate 70 near Limon, Colorado. Omo-lyamu of Balch Spring, Texas and Jones of Carrollton, Texas were stopped changing a spare tire at the time of the accident.

Tristan Martin’s 37-year old father Michel Martin had initially said he had been driving the 2003 Volvo tractor trailer, but police investigation determined Tristan was behind the wheel at the time. Very soon after the impact Tristan Martin’s friends, who had been following the big rig in another vehicles, picked up Tristan and drove him away from the accident scene leaving his father Michel behind to speak to the police.

Some states permit teenagers to get a commercial driver’s license, but they must be at least 18-years old. Interstate truckers must be at least 21-years old. Lydia Martin, Tristan’s aunt, is quoted in the Channel 11 article as telling reporters that Tristan didn’t need a commercial driver’s license because the vehicle only had one axle and they considered it to be a personal farm vehicle. Authorities in Colorado are still investigating whether Tristan and his father were in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Amanda Omo-lyamu’s husband Emmanuel said he “…would have preferred somebody capable of handling a truck like that was the one behind the wheel.” Emmanuel told reporters that Amanda had recently lost her job at a Marshall’s department store and was trying to reconnect with old family members.

Two 18-wheelers crash on Highway 149 in Pinehurst – driver injured

FOX News is reporting a major accident on State Highway 149 in Pinehurst, Texas involving two 18-wheeler trucks. The highway was shut down in both directions near Millhouse Road in southwest Montgomery County as crews worked to clear the wreckage.  The accident was reported around 9:00am this morning. A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety told FOX that an 18-wheeler lost a load of large timber logs, then another big-rig heading in the opposite direction crashed into the logs, causing that big-rig to leave the highway and crash, injuring the driver. That injured driver was transported via life flight to the hospital in unknown condition. The trailer carrying the logs lost its rear axle and wheels, and the other truck that struck the logs sustained heavy damage to the cab and cargo areas, spilling its cardboard box cargo onto the highway.

Hopefully the driver of the 18-wheeler that left the roadway is going to be okay.  If you have been injured in an 18-wheeler accident, do not risk damaging your claim by going it alone. Smith & Hassler’s experienced personal injury attorneys can be reached 24/7.

Seguin students lucky to be alive after school bus crash on SH 123

Students from Seguin, Texas were injured in a school bus accident on Friday and law enforcement officials are thankful there were no fatalities. The school bus was on its way to Barnes Middle School and Seguin High School with nine children on board when the crash happened on State Highway 123. DPS troopers say a Chrysler PT Cruiser moved over to the shoulder to allow an 18-wheeler to pass. At that time the 18-wheeler clipped the PT Cruiser sending it into the northbound traffic lane and causing the PT Cruiser to hit the school bus head-on. That set off a chain reaction collision followed by a fire which spread to the four vehicles involved. All 13 people involved were injured, but thankfully survived what could have been a multiple fatality accident.
Seguin school officials said that the 3 week old school bus was a new design that allowed the body of the school bus to detach from the chassis, reducing the impact of the collision on passengers inside. Fire fighters arriving at the scene found the school bus cab separated from the wheels and upside down. Workers on their way to work at Halliburton were praised for stopping at the crash site to help remove students from the wrecked bus and directing traffic. The 18-wheeler driver was flown to University Hospital in San Antonio in critical condition. Channel 11’s coverage of the Seguin school bus crash is here.

Trius Trucking 18-wheeler involved in accident at I-10 and Shepherd

All lanes of Interstate 10 eastbound were closed today for nearly four hours due to a multi-vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler. Westbound traffic on I-10 was down to a single lane. The 18-wheeler overturned in the roadway, partially blocking one westbound lane, and fuel was spilled on the eastbound side. Two people involved in the accident where hurt, according to the Houston Chronicle’s report, and were transported to area hospital. The location of the accident was Interstate 10 near the Shepherd exit, which is a couple of miles from Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. It rained heavily throughout the Houston are much of the day, though it is not known was role weather conditions played in the 18-wheeler accident, if any.
According to a report on KHOU’s web site, the 18-wheeler driver lost control near the Shepherd exit and jumped the center median, then collided with an eastbound vehicle, injuring the woman driving and sending her to the hospital (reportedly with non-life threatening injuries, thank goodness). From the media photographs, it appears the vehicle struck was a silver-colored Toyota Corolla. The 18-wheeler driver told police that another driver cut him off and he swerved, causing him to lose control. The 18-wheeler appears to belong to Trius Trucking, based out of Fowler, California. Channel 2’s report of the crash is here.

Officer Ryan Simpson with Splendora P.D. recovering after 18-wheeler accident

After sustaining very serious injuries in a collision with a Navajo Express 18-wheeler on FM 1485, it appears Splendora Police Officer Ryan Simpson, 28, has a long recovery road ahead of him. Officer Simpson collided with the 18-wheeler on Monday while searching for an armed robbery suspect. The incident is still under investigation and no tickets have been issued yet. The city of Splendora is having a blood drive in honor of Officer Simpson this coming Tuesday at Splendora City Hall from 10:00am to 4:00pm, or at any time thereafter at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s 14 Houston-area Donor Centers now through April 4. Channel 13’s story.
It appears opinions may be changing with respect to how the accident unfolded. A Channel 13 story states that initial reports were that the 18-wheeler pulled into the roadway in front of Officer Simpson’s patrol vehicle, interfering with Officer Simpson’s right-of-way. Now however the Texas Department of Public Safety says there is evidence the 18-wheeler was already in the roadway turning from Roberts Road onto FM 1485 prior to Officer Roberts traveling westbound on 1485 and crashing into the side of the big rig.
The Montgomery County Police Reporter on Tuesday March 20th wrote that Officer Simpson was recognizing people in his hospital room in the intensive care unit, but was not able to communicate because of a breathing tube. At that time he still had several surgeries ahead of him. Officer Simpson was missed at the East Montgomery County Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner, where he was to accept the 2011 award. In his absence Constable Hayden asked all uniformed officers to come forward and accept the award on Officer Simpson behalf. A photo was taken and sent to Officer Simpson.
An account has been set up at Amegy Bank for Officer Ryan Simpson’s benefit. Donors can go to any Amegy Bank and make a deposit to “The Ryan Simpson Benefit.” Donations can also be dropped off or mailed to Splendora City Hall, Attn: City Secretary for Ryan, P.O. Box 1087, Splendora, TX 77372.
