Forerunner driver killed in accident at Falvel and FM2920

One driver died and another way injured in a two car accident early this morning. At around 2:00am a Toyota Forerunner SUV was speeding down FM2920 when it ran a red light at Falvel and struck another car. The Forerunner rolled over into a ditch and the driver of the Forerunner died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Investigators told Channel 2 they will test the deceased driver to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Without wanting to rush to judgment, when a car crash happens in the early morning hours on the weekend, alcohol is usually to blame. FOX News’ coverage of the accident is here.

Strack Intermediate students mourn loss of Ana Sanchez to car accident

The end of the school year with the prospect of the summer vacation ahead would usually be a happy time for students at Strack Intermediate School, but today was spent mourning the loss of 14-year old Ana Sanchez who was hit by a car and killed on Monday. Ana and her friend Mauricio Mendez, who was riding a bike, were on Louetta near Kuykendahl in the Spring area when a black-colored Dodge Charger sedan hit the two teenagers. Ana, a seventh grader at Strack, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mauricio was rushed to hospital. Before classes started at Strack this morning, staff and students held a moments silence in Ana’s honor. Many students wore blue colored clothing, the color Ana was wearing when she died. Students and staff are signing a school yearbook to give to Ana’s family. Detectives investigating the crash say they believe the driver of the black Dodge, who has not been identified in press reports, was intoxicated at the time he hit the teenagers: results of a blood test have not yet been released and no charges have been filed against the driver. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies said they received several calls of someone driving erratically on Louetta prior to the crash. Ana Sanchez’ family said Ana’s organs were donated: hopefully another family will gain some hope from this tragedy. Channel 2’s story is here.

Boat tire crashes through woman’s windshield on Highway 146

A woman driving in Baytown was injured Memorial Day Monday when a tire and wheel came loose from a boat trailer and bounced across the Highway 146 median into oncoming traffic. Channel 11’s story says the woman in the red-colored Nissan sedan was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital because she was so shaken by the accident. It appears much of the damage was caused to the passenger side, where nobody was sitting. Nissan Pathfinder driver flees scene of fatal accident at Fondren and Harwin

A 56-year old man was killed last night in a major hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Harwin Drive and Fondren Road, and police are looking for the female driver who caused the deadly crash.

Houston police say a woman was driving a newer model silver-colored Nissan Pathfinder SUV at around 2:00am last night when she ran a red light at the intersection, t-boning a red pickup truck that was waiting to make a turn on Fondren Road.  The Pathfinder was apparently speeding because the impact was sufficient to shove the red pickup truck through the intersection and flip it onto its roof.

Investigators say the woman driver briefly checked on the 56-year old man who was trapped inside the pickup truck. Instead of helping the man she had just crashed into, the woman and her male passenger fled the scene on foot.  Houston Police Department is confident however that they will be able to identify the woman who was driving the Pathfinder.  Sergeant D. Thomas with HPD told reporters that they have fingerprints lifted from the Pathfinder and also DNA from the driver and passenger side airbags which deployed in the wreck.

Emergency responders tried to save the trapped man inside the pickup truck but he had already died from his injuries.  The name of the man in the pickup truck has not yet been released.

If you have information that may help police identify the driver of the Nissan Pathfinder or her passenger, please call the HPD hit and run unit at 713 247 4065 or Houston Crime Stoppers at 713 222 TIPS.  Crash investigators believe the couple in the Nissan Pathfinder fled because they had just left a nearby club and the woman was probably driving while intoxicated. The woman is described as Hispanic and between the ages of 20 and 25.

This is an absolute disgrace: hopefully HPD will get the driver of the Pathfinder quickly identified and in custody. Our sympathies to the friends and family of the victim in the red pickup truck.
