Pasadena Wal-Mart shoplifter runs red light, killing mother and injuring daughter

Police say a woman in her 20’s is responsible for a fatal intersection accident in Pasadena, and that the woman was fleeing the scene of a shoplifting include at Wal-Mart when the accident happened.  According to Channel 2’s video report, the suspect has made an attempt earlier at the Wal-Mart to walk out without paying for items including CDs, DVDs and baby clothes, but she was challenged and left after making an excuse.  The woman then returned to the Wal-Mart about an hour later and left the store with approximately $50-worth of stolen toys. This time Wal-Mart loss prevention followed the woman to the parking lot and challenged her, but the alleged thief assaulted the loss prevention person, pushing him/her down, then fleeing in a white Ford pickup truck.

At the intersection of Fairmont Parking and Nations Driver, the shoplifter in the pickup truck ran a red light and t-boned a red-colored SUV that was proceeding on a green light. The woman in the red SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman’s 14-year old daughter was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The District Attorney’s Office is assessing what charges will be brought against the shoplifter.

Trench collapse kills worker

A worker was killed yesterday when a 15-20 foot deep trench he was working in collapsed, burying him.

The crew was working to repair a broken water main near Longenbaugh and Oakfield Glen. The trench wall were not properly shored-up said Houston Fire Department, and the soft mud walls of the trench gave way while two workers were in the trench. One man was able to crawl out after the collapse but his co-worker was completely buried. It took rescue units several hours to reach the trapped man because the trench had to be properly supported before firefighters could enter. Neither worker’s name has been released; presumably OSHA will investigate since the accident involved a workplace fatality.

Fatal crash on Beltway 8 involving Global Waste Services dump truck: two killed

Houston news outlets are reporting a  four vehicle accident at a Beltway 8 toll plaza around 11:00 a.m. this morning. Two people were killed and several others injured when a Global Waste Services tractor pulling a dumpster trailer crashed into an extended cab pickup truck with four occupants, and then struck a gold-colored Honda occupied by a Precinct 4 Deputy Constable and his wife.  After striking the pickup and the gold Honda, the Global Waste Services truck then collided with another pickup truck waiting at the toll booths; the dump truck then hit a concrete retaining wall and burst into flames.

Per Channel 2’s report investigators “don’t know how the accident happened”, though from what has been reported so far it appears rather clear: the driver of the Global Waste Services truck for some reasons was unable to stop in time and plowed into traffic ahead of him.  A very interesting comment was posted on Channel 2’s web page by an apparent fact witness, who wrote the following:

I actually followed this dump truck from 45 and the beltway. He was swerving all over and actually hit a truck entering the on ramp. I started to call the police because he kept going. Before I realized the toll booth was right ahead and he was not stopping. I stopped about 100 yards behind him and just watch this scene unfold. I am still crying. The poor souls in the toll lane had no idea he was coming. It was a scene out of a movie and I watched as if I were in a theatre. There was a man in the middle of the street. There was debris and fire and glass and people running…it was absolutely insane. I am relieved I was behind him and knew to stay back. I pray for the families of the lives lost. I honestly believe the guy driving the dump truck had to have had some medical emergency.”

Vehicle fire after accident on Almeda Genoa claims two lives

A two vehicle accident on Almeda Genoa Road in Houston claimed two lives over the weekend.  Around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday morning a car pulled out from a stop sign on Martin Luther King Boulevard and attempted to turn right onto Almeda Genoa Road. The car apparently interfered with the right-of-way of a red or maroon-colored pickup truck heading westbound on Almeda Genoa, causing a collision. The car was knocked in a ditch by the impact and the pickup rolled over, coming to rest on its roof before catching fire. Tragically the driver and passenger in the pickup were unable to exit the vehicle and were trapped inside: both were killed. The car driver was taken to Ben Taub in serious condition and police are continuing to investigate.  Channel 2 Houston’s story is here.

Woman handcuffed in police car ejected and killed in accident

A police officer was injured and a handcuffed female passenger in the police car was killed in a two vehicle accident early this morning in downtown Houston. The crash happened at the intersection of Chartres Street and Texas Street at around 3:35 a.m. when a red-colored Chevy Cobalt compact car driven by a 21-year old woman crashed into the side of the police car. The officer suffered minor injuries and was taken via EMS to the emergency room to be checked out. The woman who was handcuffed and detained in the police car was thrown out of the vehicle and died at the scene.

H.P.D. Sergeant Ignacia Izaguire told Channel 11 News that police department policy requires detainees be belted while they are being transported (which makes sense, because if they are handcuffed they can’t fasten their own seat belt). An investigation will be conducted to determine if that policy was followed by the 15-year veteran officer who was driving the police car. Typically police patrol units have a camera inside the car that records occupants riding in the back seat, so presumably a review of that camera footage will be a big part of the investigation. It is difficult to imagine how the detainee could have been completely ejected from the police car if she were properly seat belted. The woman had been taken into custody earlier in the evening on the grounds of Hobby Airport because she was determined to be a hazard to herself: she was being transported to a facility to sober up.
