18-wheeler accident on I-10 East, woman rescued by bystanders

Investigators say a 26-year old woman was speeding down Interstate 10 East around 3:30 a.m. Saturday near Magnolia when she crashed into another car. The car that was struck ended up coming to rest against the concrete center divider and the speeding car came to a stop in the middle of the freeway. An approaching 18-wheeler couldn’t stop in time and struck the woman’s car causing it to burst into flames. Some witnesses rushed to the woman’s rescue to attempt to remove her from the vehicle, including Calvin Rutledge. The woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition with burns on 15% of her body. The freeway was shut down for a couple of hours. Channel 2’s story is here.

18 wheeler carrying pipe hits vehicle on North 610 Loop

A big rig crashed into a passenger vehicle on the 610 North Loop yesterday morning at around 9:30 a.m. shutting down all westbound lanes at 610 and I-45 North. Investigators believe the rainy conditions were a factor in the crash: the 18 wheeler slid on the roadway and the truck driver lost control and hit the other vehicle. The load of pipes spilled from the 18 wheeler’s trailer and onto the freeway. Channel 2’s story did not include a great deal of detail, but the driver’s injuries are reported as being non-life threatening.

Griselda Aza, alleged drunk driver kills 2 on Highway 249 at Antoine

Two people were killed by a drunk driver in a two car accident around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday on State Highway 249 at Antoine in Houston. Griselda Aza, 33, driving a pickup truck northbound on SH 249 ran a red light at Antoine and crashed into the driver’s side of a silver Honda heading westbound on Antoine. A woman driving the car (Darlene Hubbard) and a male passenger (Alphonse Jackson, Jr.) were both killed on impact. There were two Harris County Sheriff’s deputies at the intersection at the time: one actually stopped to avoid being hit by the pickup. Griselda Aza was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition where a blood draw revealed a blood alcohol content of .217 according to a Channel 11 story, which would make the woman almost two and one half times the legal limit for intoxication. Aza has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Channel 2’s story.

Good Samaritan changing tire struck and killed on 610 South Loop

A good deed turned tragic late last night on Houston’s South 610 Loop. A man stopped to help two other motorists involved in a minor accident was killed when a second crash happened. The two vehicles involved in the first accident came to a stop in travel lanes, HPD say, when a passing driver stopped and exited his vehicle to see if anyone needed assistance. An approaching car then rear-ended the Good Samaritan’s sedan, and the man tried to run across the freeway to avoid being struck. A passing SUV was unable to avoid the man and struck him. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. A total of five vehicles were involved in the accident which happened near Stella Link. Channel 11’s story. Channel 13’s story.

12-year old boy injured in pit bull attack on Bauman Road

A 12-year old boy was rushed to hospital this past Monday morning when a neighbor’s pit bull dog escaped and bit him on the arm. According to Channel 11’s report, the boy was walking to school in the 7900 block of Bauman Road when the attack happened. Investigating officers said it appeared the dog has pushed a cinder block to the side and escaped through a gap in the home’s fence. One boy said this was not the first time the dog had attacked and recounted another incident when the dog started to bite and rip the pants of kids walking past the home. The dog’s owner Raydene Ambriz however claims the dog is frequently provoked by kids who will kick at the fence or throw stones at the dog. Fortunately the boy’s injuries were not life threatening and he was taken to LBJ Hospital for treatment. The pit bull will be quarantined by BARC for 10-days and checked for rabies, a standard procedure when a person is bitten.

Hit-and-run driver wrecks vehicles on Harbrook Drive in Houston

An SUV driver wrecked a couple of parked vehicles last night on Harbrook Drive and decided to jump out and run off. Police say the driver was traveling too fast while trying to turn onto Edna, causing him to lose control: he skidded into a parked truck, took out an iron fence then smashed into a red minivan. Then he jumped out and fled the scene: he was located and arrested by police officers a few blocks from the accident scene.  Police said they will check to see if the man was drunk. Without passing judgment on this specific case, there are a handful of frequent reasons that hit-and-run drivers take off after a car accident: they don’t have insurance, their license is suspended, they are driving drunk or on drugs, they have drugs on them or in their vehicle, the vehicle is stolen or they have warrants for their arrest. Channel 2’s account of the antics of this particular mastermind can be read here.

The vehicle hit the median and rolled several times across the eastbound lanes, coming to rest in a wooded area. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Head-on wreck on Parker Road at Bretshire hospitalizes four people

A driver’s failure to take account of standing water on a roadway appears to have been the cause of a two car head-on crash yesterday. At around 9:15 p.m. firefighters were called to Parker Road at Bretshire Road to pry a woman out of her red Dodge car. Police say the Dodge driver failed to notice water covering the roadway as she drove eastbound: she lost control of her car and slid into the westbound lane, striking a blue-colored car head-on. The four adults taken to the hospital were in stable condition. Channel 2’s report is here. Channel 13’s story is here (note this article shows two different vehicles from the Channel 2 story).
