Vehicle fire after accident on Almeda Genoa claims two lives

A two vehicle accident on Almeda Genoa Road in Houston claimed two lives over the weekend.  Around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday morning a car pulled out from a stop sign on Martin Luther King Boulevard and attempted to turn right onto Almeda Genoa Road. The car apparently interfered with the right-of-way of a red or maroon-colored pickup truck heading westbound on Almeda Genoa, causing a collision. The car was knocked in a ditch by the impact and the pickup rolled over, coming to rest on its roof before catching fire. Tragically the driver and passenger in the pickup were unable to exit the vehicle and were trapped inside: both were killed. The car driver was taken to Ben Taub in serious condition and police are continuing to investigate.  Channel 2 Houston’s story is here.

Head on crash on Mykawa injures three, alcohol involvement suspected

The driver of a red pickup swerved out of his lane around 10:00 p.m. Friday night while traveling on Mykawa, then crossed into oncoming traffic causing a head-on collision that injured a man and a 12-year old boy. All three people involved were taken to Ben Taub in serious but stable condition. Police found beer cans in the cab of the red pickup truck so alcohol involvement is obviously suspected as being a factor in the crash.

Concrete truck and pickup collide on FM 1942 killing one

The driver of a pickup truck was killed Monday morning in a collision with a concrete truck at the intersection of FM 1942 and Bohemian Hall Road in Houston. The collision happened around 10:50 a.m. Police say the pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and a female passenger was transported to the emergency room at Memorial Hermann. The concrete truck driver was also transported with minor injuries.  Images from Channel 11 News‘ helicopter footage show the concrete truck came to rest in the opposing lane of traffic. According to Channel 2’s news coverage, the cause of the accident was the pickup truck driver’s failure to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign.  Channel 2 reports that the female passenger was life-flighted, and lost her right arm in the accident.

Car accident at Reveille and Dixie caused by suspected drunk driver

A driver is suspected of being drunk when he caused a major two car accident early this morning at the intersection of Reveille Street and Dixie Drive in southeast Houston. HPD say a white car, apparently a newer model Chevy Malibu or Impala, was speeding down Reveille at around 80 MPH. A white colored pickup truck was eastbound on Dixie Drive when it was t-boned by the car and pushed through the intersection into a yard, nearly hitting a nearby home. The pickup driver was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extracted by the fire department. Both drivers were taken to the hospital and suffered broken bones in the accident. Investigators say the driver of the white car appeared to be impaired.

Driver of Monte Carlo killed in rear-end accident on North Loop

A pickup truck rear-ended a Chevrolet Monte Carlo at 9:45 p.m. last night, Thursday May 30th, killing the driver of the Monte Carlo and injuring his female passenger.  According to Channel 2 News Houston, the Monte Carlo and the pickup truck were both heading westbound on the North 610 Loop when the pickup struck the car, causing major rear-end damage.  As the photograph shows, the trunk of the Monte Carlo is completely collapsed.  The driver and passenger of the Monte Carlo were both trapped inside the vehicle, probably because the rear-end impact pushed the rear panels forward jamming shut the driver and passenger doors.  The driver of the Monte Carlo was taken to the hospital where he died. Police say the pickup truck driver was not intoxicated at the time of the crash and no charges are anticipated.

It appears the driver of a Dodge pickup truck crashed into the rear of an 18-wheeler broken down by the roadside: the pickup driver was killed. Photographs from Channel 11’s helicopter (see below) do not appear to show any warning triangles or cones placed behind the broken down 18-wheeler.

Wrong way accident on Interstate 45 near Conroe kills 2

Interstate 45 at FM 1488 was shut down this morning after a double fatality wrong way accident. The DPS has confirmed that at least two people died in the crash which happened around 2:45am in the Conroe area. Investigators told Channel 13 News that a female driver in a pickup truck entered I-45 at Tamina Road heading the wrong way, north in the southbound lanes. A witness called 911 to report the driver and Shenandoah Police were on their way to intervene but could not get there in time to prevent the head-on accident. The pickup truck struck a car occupied by three teenagers, killing the car’s driver and front seat passenger and injuring the third teen in the back seat. The wrong-way driver was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, and so far has not been charged for the wreck. I-45 between Conroe and The Woodlands was expected to be shut down for some time. Elia Ortiz hurt when 12 year old driver crashes through her fence

Elia Ortiz is recovering after suffering some serious injuries when a GMC pickup truck crashed through the fence of her home in the Woodland Oaks subdivision. When a 12-year old boy’s parents refused to take him to the store, he took the keys to the pickup truck without permission. According to police the boy lost control of the pickup truck and crashed completely through the fence, hitting 32-year old Elia in her leg and back. Elia was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with a fractured spine and sprained leg. The accident happened Saturday May 26th at around 1:00pm; the home is near Garsee and Hollister. Elia was released from the hospital Saturday evening in a lot of pain. Elia’s neighbors said that once the accident was over the boy was crying and asking for forgiveness in Spanish, saying it was all an accident. Channel 2’s story is here.

Nissan Pathfinder driver flees scene of fatal accident at Fondren and Harwin

A 56-year old man was killed last night in a major hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Harwin Drive and Fondren Road, and police are looking for the female driver who caused the deadly crash.

Houston police say a woman was driving a newer model silver-colored Nissan Pathfinder SUV at around 2:00am last night when she ran a red light at the intersection, t-boning a red pickup truck that was waiting to make a turn on Fondren Road.  The Pathfinder was apparently speeding because the impact was sufficient to shove the red pickup truck through the intersection and flip it onto its roof.

Investigators say the woman driver briefly checked on the 56-year old man who was trapped inside the pickup truck. Instead of helping the man she had just crashed into, the woman and her male passenger fled the scene on foot.  Houston Police Department is confident however that they will be able to identify the woman who was driving the Pathfinder.  Sergeant D. Thomas with HPD told reporters that they have fingerprints lifted from the Pathfinder and also DNA from the driver and passenger side airbags which deployed in the wreck.

Emergency responders tried to save the trapped man inside the pickup truck but he had already died from his injuries.  The name of the man in the pickup truck has not yet been released.

If you have information that may help police identify the driver of the Nissan Pathfinder or her passenger, please call the HPD hit and run unit at 713 247 4065 or Houston Crime Stoppers at 713 222 TIPS.  Crash investigators believe the couple in the Nissan Pathfinder fled because they had just left a nearby club and the woman was probably driving while intoxicated. The woman is described as Hispanic and between the ages of 20 and 25.

This is an absolute disgrace: hopefully HPD will get the driver of the Pathfinder quickly identified and in custody. Our sympathies to the friends and family of the victim in the red pickup truck.
