Police car rear ended on Southwest Freeway

Police say a woman was speeding around 1:00 a.m. this morning when she slammed on her brakes, losing control of her Nissan car before striking a concrete barrier, spinning out then rear-ending a Houston Police Department patrol car. Both vehicles are totaled. The officer in the patrol car was watching for speeders at the time of the accident on the Southwest Freeway near Beltway 8. KHOU said neither the officer nor the driver of the Nissan were injured in the accident; the driver faces two traffic citations.

Police officer hurt when patrol car rear ended by SUV on Highway 290

Late Thursday night an SUV rear-ended a HPD patrol unit that was stopped with its emergency lights activated on Highway 290 near Pinemont.  The truck of the police car is crushed all the way to the base of the rear window, which suggests a very significant impact given the size of the trunk on a Ford Crown Victoria. At the time of the accident the officer was sitting in the police car and was blocking an exit ramp for a stranded driver. The police officer and the driver of the SUV were transported to the emergency room; according to Channel 2’s report police are now investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Driver of Monte Carlo killed in rear-end accident on North Loop

A pickup truck rear-ended a Chevrolet Monte Carlo at 9:45 p.m. last night, Thursday May 30th, killing the driver of the Monte Carlo and injuring his female passenger.  According to Channel 2 News Houston, the Monte Carlo and the pickup truck were both heading westbound on the North 610 Loop when the pickup struck the car, causing major rear-end damage.  As the photograph shows, the trunk of the Monte Carlo is completely collapsed.  The driver and passenger of the Monte Carlo were both trapped inside the vehicle, probably because the rear-end impact pushed the rear panels forward jamming shut the driver and passenger doors.  The driver of the Monte Carlo was taken to the hospital where he died. Police say the pickup truck driver was not intoxicated at the time of the crash and no charges are anticipated.

Driver killed in 18 wheeler accident on Houston’s North Loop

Local media outlets are reporting a person was killed in a rear end accident involving a white van and an 18 wheeler on the North Loop near Jensen Thursday afternoon. At around 3:30 p.m. the van hit the rear of an 18 wheeler in the eastbound lanes. The van, apparently a commercial vehicle, sustained massive front end damage in the crash. Lanes were closed for several hours as Houston police investigated the cause of the accident. Two media outlets, the Chronicle and Channel 13, report that a person was injured rather than this being a fatality.

Rear end crash on FM 1960 near Treaschwig claims two lives

Two drivers were killed in a rear end car accident on FM 1960 on Saturday night. Harris County Precinct 4 Constables investigators say a white Chevy pickup was traveling eastbound on FM 1960 at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a Toyota Matrix compact car: two women were inside the Toyota. The pickup went airborne on impact and flew into a power pole, landing in a parking lot. The driver of the pickup truck was ejected, killing him on impact. The passenger in the Toyota Matrix was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition, the driver died on her way to hospital. KHOU’s story is here.

Serious injuries in four car accident on FM 1960 in Spring

Several cars that were facing westbound on FM 1960 in Spring were stopped at a traffic light at Cypress Station around 12:20 a.m. Saturday morning when an SUV slammed into the rear of an older model Cadillac waiting in line. The Cadillac was shoved forward into the vehicle in front of it, then the Cadillac sideswiped a fourth vehicle. Reportedly the SUV flipped over onto its side and the driver had to be extracted by rescue crews: the was transported by Life Flight in critical condition. A man and a woman in the Cadillac were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. Two men in the red-colored vehicle that the Cadillac was pushed into were treated at the scene but were arrested when deputies found a large amount of marijuana in their vehicle. Channel 11’s report is here.

Interestingly a person who commented on an accident report on Channel 2’s web site claimed to be the only witness to the accident, and offered the following observations:
I was probably the only witness to this wreck. the driver of the suv was in fact speeding. there were 10-15 vehicles stopped at the red light when the collision occured. im pretty good at judging speed, and i estimated the suv to be traveling in excess of 75mph but no more than 85mph (keep in mind that it is a 40mph zone). this wreck was pretty bad. if it was in a movie it would have been a michael bay film. life flight took ~30-45 mins from the time the road had been closed off and crews were already on the scene before it arrived and landed. both the suv and the caddy had to be cut open to remove the occupants, although there wasnt much left of either. i hope that the driver that caused all of this (the driver of the suv) gets the harshest penalties. Seeing it all happen first hand, i can only pray that justice is served. (I have excluded some details from this post intentionally).

SUV driver may face charges in fatal motorcycle accident

A motorcyclist was killed in a four vehicle collision that happened yesterday afternoon on the northbound West Sam Houston Tollway at Briar Forest Drive. Precinct 5 deputies say that around 5:20 p.m. a motorcycle rider slowed for traffic ahead when he was rear-ended by an SUV. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike: the bike traveled forward and hit another vehicle while the SUV crashed into another car. The victim, who appeared to be a middle aged man, died at the scene. Deputies say charges against the SUV driver are possible, but there is no indication alcohol impairment was the cause of the accident. Channel 13’s article states the motorcycle rider was struck from behind by a Honda Goldwing, though that is almost certainly an error since the Honda Goldwing is a type of motorcycle. The victim was probably riding a Honda Goldwing.
